"Thirteen Lives" is a drama film depicting the real-life story of a Thai football team comprised mainly of children becoming stranded in a cave and the ensuing rescue efforts. The film is tense throughout, and even if you know the story behind the events depicted, the claustrophobic rendition of the caves, the ever-increasing tension over the location of the missing team and the deliberations over the best way to retrieve them, all make for an extraordinarily gripping viewing experience, bolstered by affecting performances from every actor involved, as well as its heartwarming depiction of people from all walks of life and all over the world coming together to solve this problem and rescue the team. This is an intense film that I will not forget any time soon. "All Is Lost" is a minimalist survival drama film starring Robert Redford as a nameless man out at sea whose boat gets damaged. We know nothing about the character's background or why he is at sea, nor where the shipping container that damaged his boat came from. These details are unimportant in the face of the peril the man now faces. The film has no dialogue, and most of the spoken lines are from the main character talking to himself and lamenting his condition. Yet it is a thoroughly gripping experience from beginning to end as we watch the man's struggle to survive in ever-worsening conditions. This is so compelling to watch and I cannot recommend it enough! "2012" is a disaster film starring John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Peet, and Thandiwe Newton. It follows various characters as they attempt to prepare for and survive a series of global disasters. The plot is thin, the characters are just as thinly-sketched, and yet the film forces us to spend far too long with these hollow characters as if they are interesting. Fortunately, the special effects manage to salvage this film, with grandiose scenes of disaster and destruction giving a sense of horror, wonder, and awe. The effects also hold up quite well for a film made in 2009. I would say that if you want to watch a mindless disaster film with good special effects, "2012" is a good choice.
